4000 Miles

2025 · Research Project

An interdisciplinary research project that bridges two disciplines, in two languages, on two continents, in two time zones. 4000 Miles seeks to show how a sustainable practice of intercultural thinking and global cooperation can be realised in higher education in design and art.

After my graduation I had the chance of working on this research project which is a collaboration between Faculty of Design, THWS in Würzburg and Herron School of Art + Design in Indianapolis. In parallel to several iterations of collaborative classes between the two universities the goal was the development of hybrid methods and tools which enhance this intercontinental, educational setting.

Brewing Banter

One of the main prototypes resulting from the project, called Brewing Banter, is designed to foster spontaneous and informal communication in art and design studio environments within an international collaborative context.
The key idea is to create a setting similar to conversations around water coolers, coffee machines or equivalents, despite the fact that students are at two completely different locations on earth.

Prototype for one of the Brewing Banter setups
User Interface, showing local time zones and a video chat integration which enables students to connect over a distance.
Prototyping process: Sensors detect activity at one of the Banters which then activates a lamp on its counterpart.

The Brewing Banter concept was published in the form of an pictorial at ACM Creativity & Cognition ’25: Brewing Banter: Augmenting Intercontinental Studio Classes for Casual Communication
